Trip Planning Checklist: From 30 Days Out to Departure Day
With Trip Prep, 'When' Matters More Than 'What'
Packing lists are everywhere online. But what actually matters isn't the length of the list — it's order and timing. Flights are cheaper booked early, visas take time to issue, and currency exchange and packing belong right before departure. Scramble the order and you'll miss something no matter how hard you prepare.
This guide splits trip prep into four stages — 30 days out → 7 days out → the day before → day-of — with a checklist of what to do at each point. Follow it in order and you'll leave with nothing forgotten.
30 Days Out: Lock In the Big Things
A month out, handle whatever takes time or benefits from being done early.
☐ Book flights — earlier is better, especially in peak season. See how to book cheaper flights.
☐ Book lodging — a free-cancellation option is safe to grab early. For choosing a type, see the accommodation guide.
☐ Check passport validity — under six months to expiry can mean denied entry, so renew it.
☐ Check visas — learn whether you need one and how long it takes. See the visa guide.
☐ Sketch the itinerary — set the broad frame of which city on which day.
7 Days Out: Fill In Details and Prevent Problems
A week out, handle detailed plans and health/safety.
☐ Finalize the itinerary — daily activities, routes, and restaurants. Traveling as a group? Use how to plan together.
☐ Get travel insurance — it must be purchased before departure to be covered.
☐ Sort data and connectivity — SIM, eSIM, or roaming. See the roaming vs eSIM guide.
☐ Vaccinations and medicine if needed — check the vaccination guide.
☐ Save copies of key documents — passport, tickets, confirmations, as photos and in the cloud.
The Day Before: Packing and Final Checks
The day before, pack and do a last review.
☐ Pack — split carry-on and checked luggage; keep valuables, medicine, and chargers in the carry-on. See the carry-on essentials guide.
☐ Currency or cards — prepare some cash and a card that works abroad.
☐ Check-in and seats — do online check-in in advance if available.
☐ Plan airport transport — work backward from departure to set when to leave home.
☐ Share the itinerary with family — in case of emergencies.
Day-Of: One Last Check Before You Leave
On departure day, five minutes before you leave prevents big trouble.
☐ Passport, wallet, phone — with these three, most things are solvable. Check once more at the door.
☐ Charger and power bank — power banks can't be checked, so keep them in the carry-on.
☐ Home check — gas, electricity, water, window locks, trash.
☐ Arrive with margin — international flights usually mean arriving 2–3 hours early, so leave home accordingly.
Wrap-Up: The Checklist Is Half the Trip
A well-prepared trip is relaxed on the ground. Miss something and you'll burn day one fixing it. Big things at 30 days, details at 7, packing the day before, a final check day-of — keep that order and you leave with nothing forgotten.
